Garry Jackson on bass and Genís Bagés on drums was a fun experience. Here is an excerpt from my latest session in the studio.
I am very fortunate to have the basics to provide for my family. I have a studio to create art, my son and good friends, and family. What more can you ask for?

I will start a weekly session soon amongst friends to keep the positivity going. All is fine, I am not touring and traveling. Let’s see what happens in the future.

It has been rainy weather lately here, it is like living in London again. I hope the sunshine will appear soon.

I have been listening to Joy Crookes who keeps my pop appetite content. My son is getting me into drill music and I am trying to play Coltrane changes.

That is about it. I went to the states to check in with my dad and family. Quite strange to be back there, it seems very polarized. I am at a place where I feel like a foreigner there although I speak the language. Culture is changing, and the new generation has some really good ideas. My conclusion is that change is natural and I can’t judge people for becoming more politically left or right.

The nicest thing I did was reconnect with all my old homies in Tucson. They are doing well and still working it.

Good to be back here living the life I have. I am looking for the next project but in no hurry.

Ugh, taxes are on the horizon.

Here are some pictures from a recent Italy trip.

I am enjoying this time off to be in peace and enjoy life.

I want to share a project from last year before the pandemic happened. It is my pursuit of wonder and enjoyment.

It is called the “The Cosmic Trio” featuring Javier Vercher on woodwinds, Garry Jackson on electric bass, and me on electric guitar. It is a very special project that Javier recorded by chance. It is raw and unedited.

I would like to take the time and share with you my new recording, WHAT IS NOW.

It was conceived as a vinyl release so there are two sides to it. Side A contains an abstract sound composition entitled, Migration Suite: Music for Woodwinds and Jazz Ensemble. This recording was recorded live in Berlin in September 2019.

Side B contains two songs, Southern Wind and Rumba Blues, that were recorded during the initial Covid-19 lockdown during the months of April, May, and June. These songs were recorded in various parts of the world. I called friends in London, Los Angeles, and Tucson who had the ability to record at home. The music reflects much more of coming home for me and a different style from Side A.

I have a wide variety of tastes and I wanted to share these with you. I know I demand a lot from the listener but that is how I work. These are meaningful compositions to me, hence the limited vinyl release. I hope you can hear something that you can connect with on this special recording.

The process for me was a cathartic experience. It digs deep into my subconscious about human belonging.

I believe it really will make a difference. This project was important to me, not only to raise money for people in need, but to keep our attention on the issue of refugees - even as the world faces unprecedented health and economic crises.

This is a difficult period for many. And I am especially grateful that - despite these tough times - we pulled together for this effort. 🙏🏽💖
Ray Sandovaltag:raysandoval.com,2005:Post/63549522020-05-13T11:36:50+02:002020-06-16T12:53:30+02:00Tapas de Monk
I hope we are learning many things about ourselves and our loved ones during this unique time in the world. I hope most of it is positive and that we are reflecting on what is important to us.

I decided to put together some short videos entitled “Tapas de Monk.” Thelonious Monk is one of my favorite jazz musicians so I finally had the guts to record these. They are short pieces of some of my favorite Monk tunes. I think it is a right of passage for many jazz musicians to learn these tunes and break them down as they give an insight into what jazz is. Monk played with rhythm, harmony and form constantly throughout his music. His unique voice is weaved within his compositions and improvisations.

Please check out my Instagram as I plan on releasing these arrangements weekly. This gives me the chance to connect and hopefully brighten your day.

It is my hope we can use this time to reflect and better ourselves by this experience. I have decided to use this time for a positive time of reflection and get things done around the house. Remember that shelf you have been meaning to put up or paint that wall? Well “now is the time” as Charlie Parker played. :)

Spain has been in lockdown for almost a week. The streets usually filed with smiles, cafes and chattering have disappeared. It is quite a change of the city I know. I am not sure how long sanity can sustain but I belief we will all be alright. I have kind of felt like the last two years I have put myself into self-isolation as I have purposely stayed away from social media so it is not much of a change for me. I exercise, work on some music and hang out with my family as daily virtues.

I will miss the jazz sessions at night and hanging with friends. I hope in the next few weeks we will be able to socialize as I think that is an important part of living a healthy life. I have a terrace outside and would like to do a live show with fellow musicians to help everyone feel good again.

Please be good to your immune system. Eat healthy, exercise, take care of yourself and others.
Ray Sandovaltag:raysandoval.com,2005:Post/63549542020-02-16T12:17:25+01:002020-06-16T12:53:30+02:00José Feliciano

José Feliciano sings one of my favorite canciones! :)
Ray Sandovaltag:raysandoval.com,2005:Post/62100412020-02-10T14:39:48+01:002020-02-10T14:59:39+01:00Oscars 2020
Happy to see the academy got it right this year in my opinion. My close friends do but many others think I am just a musical geek, in which I am but always been a fan of sports. I have said many times, I am a failed athlete who turned into a musician. :-))

I want to share this excerpt I wrote while I was living in Berlin, it is dated April 14, 2016.

What can I say? Kobe has retired and yes….. i know its been covered too many times, but for me its been a look into my past. I have always been critical of Kobe, never really liking him. Living in LA during that time I felt part of the city, part of the energy there. Kobe and Shaq was great. However Kobe brought two more championships with Pau Gasol. He became a better shooter later in his career and one of the great clutch shooters. I always denied him him greatness, being critical of him.

Watching his last game against Utah made me realise his greatness. I always said, “well he’s not Michael Jordan,” but really he was not, he was Kobe. The last game was not pretty but all means but his last five minutes he willed himself to once again greatness. He knew the stage and was comfortable in it. Not many people have the mental strength to do that. He was on a stage of 10 million people watching and gave us 60 points and clutch shooting as he did throughout his career. Who does that? I don’t know but he has proven to me that he is truly one of the greats.
Ray Sandovaltag:raysandoval.com,2005:Post/60672942019-07-31T02:00:00+02:002020-02-17T12:07:30+01:00Composing Again :)
I am working on some exciting new projects for the summer.
Ok. So I have neglected writing in my journal for a while. Life goes by quickly. Spending time with my son has been my priorities these days. I have taken a step back from social media to see how I feel. I must admit its pretty nice not posting anything. I was never the person to post often but if I felt I should share an idea or interesting article, I said it. Too much is going on in the world these days, so its nice to focus on the things that matter to you.

I have been spending my days arranging and composing. I find peace in this. Let’s hope some good compositions come out of this behaviour.

Berlin has a great vibe. It reminds me of a college town with an international feel. There is good food with many vegetarian options. Transport is good and cycling is common. And cheaper than London! All these things all agree with my preference for living in a city.

I need to learn German but many speak english here which is helpful. Of course I haven't experienced winter here so let's talk next year and I can give you my thoughts on how great this city is! ;)

I always felt that the performances on my last recording Proxima Parada were recorded prematurely. It was done in a few days and live in the studio. I really never felt like the pieces had matured to their best performances. It is a jazz mentality so I was fine with it. I am finally feeling like the compositions for that recording are under my hands.

This piece was written Cordoba, Spain during my brief stay there one summer. That city has a very unique spirit and has a history that that is reflected in the beautiful mosque, La Mezquita.

I was very fortunate to play with some talented musicians, Toby Senior Vega and Helmy Agustrian in Bali. For the Tokyo trip, Tetsuya Mashine and Tomo Yamada provided the foundation. It was great to play with different rhythm sections but very challenging also. Time constraints and working with top call musicians is hard to have everyone at the same place at the same time. I am very fortunate to know and play with these guys.

I can feel autumn in the air and its good to be back here. It's nice to be riding my bicycle again and using public transport. The three P's that make life easier here in London are: Parks, Pubs and Public transport. If you have been here or visited, I think you get the jest of what I mean. I guess that makes up for the grey and rainy weather.

I have a couple of cool gigs to announce for September at Nomad Jazz venue. This Thursday and the following Thursday. I will be playing some of my originals and some funky Latin stuff with the Cabrones Buenos. When we get together its always fun and enjoyable.

Nomad is the best known unknown place on old street.

Also I haven't written about my trip out in Asia. I will get to that soon as it was a wonderful experience meeting old and new friends and playing with some great musicians. :)

Ray Sandovaltag:raysandoval.com,2005:Post/60672612013-07-16T02:00:00+02:002013-07-15T23:33:10+02:00Apa kabar?

I am writing from Bali, Indonesia. Its sunny, hot and humid. If you've never been here its quite an unique place. It has a tropical feel with many culture activities happening daily. Every summer I take time off to reflect and work on new compositions here.

I have been practicing yoga and gender wayang lately. This keeps my mind at peace and rejuvenates me. It is so humbling to play a different instrument and musical language. I have played guitar for the most part of my life but playing a foreign instrument and learning these ancient tunes is such a challenge.

I have two new shows to announce. Tokyo and Ubud. It would be great to see some familiar faces at the shows. The last time I played Tokyo was in 2006, so I am really looking forward to being back there in Shibuya on August 1. I lived there for a couple of years so I will be calling some of my old friends for a drink and kanpai.

Last year I played the Ubud Concert Series and I am happy they have asked me back again. I stay in Canggu when I am in Bali but I really like Ubud. There is a nice energy there, creative and positive. The House of Mask and Puppetry is a special place. My trio will perform on August 8 at 8:00 p.m.

Ray Sandovaltag:raysandoval.com,2005:Post/60672602013-05-29T02:00:00+02:002013-05-29T09:13:32+02:00Summer Fun!

Summer is not here yet, but is approaching soon. I will be in Asia for the summer working on some solo guitar stuff and getting some sun. There are a few dates I will do but haven't got the confirmation yet, but when I do I will post them here. Tokyo should be on the map early August. It's been a while since I visited so I am looking forward to being in Japan again.

I don't post many things here on the website as my facebook public page has many of my daily stuff and activities. I just uploaded some live video from the CD launch in London on youtube. Check it out if get the chance.

I just uploaded a few songs from the new CD for you to hear. Here is an excerpt from the liner notes of the CD to give you an idea of the concept. Enjoy!

"My latest stop is London, where I have been very fortunate to work with some outstanding musicians, including my friend Satin Singh. This album was recorded with just Satin on percussion and me on guitar. I wanted to strip it down for a more intimate feel. Satin's passion for Afro-Cuban music has shaped the unique sound on this recording, grounding my compositions with his complex rhythms.

Listen to his conga percussion on 'Round Midnight. It gives a whole new interpretation to the classic. I Do is anchored by the deep spirituality of rumba. And his bata percussion on Passage and Indian congas on Road to Jericho provide a driving beat that lays the foundation for both pieces. The result is a rich sound produced from the simplest, most basic instrumentation."

It's been a while since I published anything, CD's, writings etc. These days it seems the internet is filled with plenty of opinions and first impressions. I didn't feel the need to add any more noise.

So, I took some time off, did some thinking and tinkering and came out with several new compositions.

I am living in London now. I have a beautiful family and so far enjoy living at 51.5171° N, 0.1062° W. My son has given me a new life and a new perspective. It is a lot of hard work and I can now truly appreciate what my mother and father did for me. But until I had my son, I never really knew how special it is to be a parent.

My art is always there. I am at an age where you are what you are. You just do it and don't have so many insecurities. By this time, you do what you do because you really want to do it. Does that make sense? And I think the new compositions reflect the place I'm at now.

I am looking forward to this year. I have a new CD coming out that will launch next month. And I will be in Asia doing a few dates over the summer. Hopefully I can also get some dates back in the ol' USA.

Please take time to listen and send me your thoughts of the new recordings. It would mean a lot to me.
